The Opportunity

This is an opportunity to play a pivotal role in the design and delivery of some of Australia’s most advanced, high-performance data centre infrastructure.

As Design Manager – Engineering Design, you will lead the engineering and technical design of Macquarie Data Centres’ (MDC) data centre projects, delivering innovative, scalable, resilient and compliant solutions for hyperscale and high-density colocation customers.

Reporting to the GM Engineering & Design, you will own the design outcome across the full project lifecycle — from feasibility and due diligence, through concept and detailed design, to issued-for-construction documentation, construction support, commissioning and handover.

You’ll lead and coordinate multidisciplinary internal teams and external engineering consultants, ensuring complex designs are integrated, buildable, commercially sound and delivered to the highest technical standards.

A key focus of the role will be driving Advanced Engineering, Safety in Design, buildability, prefabrication and modularisation, while developing standardised design approaches, optimising long-lead and free-issue equipment, embedding lessons learned and driving sustainability, reliability and commercial value.

This is a role for an experienced design leader who enjoys operating at the intersection of engineering, construction, commercial delivery and customer requirements — and who wants to have a genuine influence on how next-generation data centres are designed and delivered.

Why Us?

About You

You are an experienced engineering or design professional with a strong background in data centres, mission-critical infrastructure or similarly complex environments. You bring the technical credibility to lead sophisticated multidisciplinary design teams, combined with the commercial and delivery mindset to turn great engineering into buildable outcomes.

    You will have:

    • 8–10+ years’ engineering and design experience, including at least 5 years in data centre or mission-critical environments.
    • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical or Mechanical, or a related technical discipline.
    • Proven experience leading multidisciplinary design across major, complex or fast-tracked projects.
    • Experience managing external engineering consultants and design deliverables from concept through to IFC, construction, as-built and handover.
    • Strong technical understanding across critical data centre services including HV/LV, standby power, UPS, mechanical/cooling, fire, hydraulic, BMS/EPMS, as well as civil, structural and architectural interfaces.
    • Experience working client-side, for a data centre operator, hyperscaler, engineering consultancy or similar environment.
    • Strong understanding of data centre design frameworks including Uptime Institute Tier, TIA-942, NCC/BCA and relevant AS/NZS Standards.
    • Experience with BIM and digital design tools.
    • A strong understanding of buildability, value engineering, cost, program and supply-chain considerations.
    • A genuine commitment to Safety in Design, quality and technical assurance.
    • The ability to influence and challenge consultants and stakeholders while building strong relationships across engineering, construction, procurement, commercial, operations and customer teams.
    • A continuous-improvement mindset, with an interest in innovation, sustainability, energy efficiency, PUE and NABERS for Data Centres.

Why Join Us?

You’ll join a business operating at the forefront of Australia’s data centre industry, where engineering excellence, innovation and speed of delivery are critical.

This is more than a traditional design management role. You’ll have the opportunity to influence design standards, reference designs, prefabrication and modularisation strategies and the way MDC delivers complex mission-critical infrastructure at scale with the newest technology.

You’ll work alongside highly experienced engineering, construction, commercial, procurement and operations professionals and engage directly with specialist equipment manufacturers, authorities, utilities and hyperscale and colocation customers.

If you’re looking for a role where your technical expertise can shape major infrastructure projects from the earliest stages through to operational handover, this is an opportunity to make a significant impact.

If this excites you, apply now, we'd love to hear from you!
