Company Description

Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.

Hey, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!
Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be time-consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.

Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work — we trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.

What you'd be doing in this role

As Canva scales, change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

Job Description

About the team

You'll join the Elements Experience team in the Content & Discovery Supergroup. We’re on a mission to help every user effortlessly find the content that empowers them to design. Whether it’s billions of templates, images, videos or designs — we make it discoverable. Our impact spans inspiration to creation, and we’re scaling fast.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Leading our Elements Experience team, a balanced squad of frontend, backend, and ML engineers, to deliver AI-powered content features across Canva's editor, including features like style match, style filters, and other AI-powered content features across Canva surfaces

  • Setting the technical vision for how millions of users discover, explore, and apply visual content from browsing and filtering to AI-driven style recommendations and contextual surfacing

  • Partnering across Product, Design, and platform teams while contributing hands-on to architectural decisions and mentoring engineers through code and design reviews

  • Using metrics and experimentation to drive decisions, defining success measures, interpreting signals from A/B tests and usage data, and building a team culture where curiosity about user behaviour shapes what gets built next

  • Maintaining a high bar for reliability, performance, and operational health across the team's services, while driving features at the intersection of AI and UX including model-powered interactions and reward models

  • Supporting and growing a high-performing team of ~7 engineers across disciplines, with a strong culture around craft, accountability, and genuine curiosity about the problems users are trying to solve

You're probably a match if:

  • You're an experienced engineering leader comfortable spanning frontend, backend, and ML, you don't need to be expert in all three, but you ask the right questions, unblock across the stack, and make sound technical tradeoffs

  • You've led engineers across disciplines and get genuine energy from developing people alongside products, coaching, growing careers, and building team culture matter to you as much as shipping

  • You're metrics-minded and deeply curious about users, you reach for data and experimentation to validate hypotheses, dig into qualitative and quantitative signals, and channel that curiosity into sharper problem framing for your team

  • You have a strong product sensibility, care about operational excellence, and do your best work in cross-functional partnerships with PMs, designers, and ML engineers — shipping the feature and keeping it healthy are the same job to you

  • You're strategic enough to set direction and hands-on enough to unblock your team in code
