The Opportunity

At Clayton Utz, we are looking for an Events Adviser who knows that a great event starts well before anyone walks into the room.

We’re not looking for someone who simply takes a brief, books a venue and runs through a checklist. We’re looking for an experienced events professional who can bring ideas, judgement and a hands-on approach to the way we plan and deliver events across the firm.

You’ll have your own portfolio and work across everything from targeted client events and industry roundtables through to major national programmes, sponsorships and large-scale firm events.

For us, the event itself is only part of it. Done well, events create the right environment for useful conversations, stronger relationships and trust to develop.

Some will come with a clear brief. Others will start with a Partner or team asking, “Could we do something around this?” You’ll help turn that into the right event, for the right audience, in the right format, then take responsibility for making it happen.

About The Role

As part of our national Events team, you’ll manage your own portfolio with a high degree of autonomy while working directly with Partners, lawyers and teams across Clients and Markets.

You’ll need to be just as comfortable working through the detail of a run sheet as you are sitting with a Partner to work through what an event should actually achieve.

There is also plenty changing in how we work. We’re introducing new event technology, building HubSpot into the way we manage client engagement and exploring how better data, insights and AI can improve how we plan, deliver and learn from events.

We don’t expect you to arrive with all the answers, just an interest in helping us work them out.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Own your events: Take events from the first conversation through planning, delivery and follow-up.
  • Shape the approach: Work with Partners and teams to understand what they are trying to achieve and help determine the right audience, format and experience.
  • Bring ideas: Look beyond what we have done before and suggest different formats, venues or approaches where they will produce a better result.
  • Manage the detail: Build event plans and run sheets, manage invitations and registrations, coordinate internal teams and keep the moving parts under control.
  • Manage suppliers and budgets: Source and negotiate with venues and suppliers, manage contracts and keep spend on track.
  • Lead on the day: Take responsibility for delivery and deal calmly with the things that inevitably change at the last minute.
  • Develop partnerships: Help identify and manage sponsorships and external partnerships that support the firm’s events and broader objectives.
  • Use insight and technology: Help us get more from HubSpot, our event technology, data and emerging tools, and use what we learn to improve future events.
  • Contribute beyond events: Take a role in broader national Clients and Markets projects and business development initiatives.
  • Support the team: Help other members of the Events team when workloads demand it.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experience: Around four years or more working in corporate events, ideally in professional services or another complex environment.
  • Events judgement: You know what makes an event work and can spot the difference between what someone has asked for and what they might actually need.
  • Hands-on approach: You can contribute ideas and advice, then get into the detail required to deliver them.
  • Stakeholder confidence: You’re comfortable working with senior people, asking the right questions and building trust quickly.
  • Organisation and commercial awareness: You can manage several events at once, understand budgets and suppliers, and make good decisions about where time and money are spent.
  • Curiosity: You’re interested in what new technology, data and AI might make possible, without losing sight of the fact that events are ultimately about people.
  • Calm under pressure: Events change. Speakers move. Numbers change. Things go wrong. You can adapt without creating unnecessary drama.

Experience with event management platforms, HubSpot or other marketing technology is useful, but we care more about whether you can learn quickly and use systems well.

As with most events roles, there will be times when early starts or evening events are part of the job, so some flexibility in working hours is important.

Your Team

You’ll join our national Events team within Clients and Markets and report to our Events Manager in Sydney.

Clients and Markets sits within our broader Business Advisory Services team. You’ll work directly with Partners and senior leaders and alongside colleagues across business development, marketing, digital, creative, communications and client experience.

You’ll be backed with the technology, expertise and autonomy to do your job well, while having room to contribute ideas and influence how we work.

Why Clayton Utz?

If you’re already good at delivering events and want your next role to give you more ownership, exposure and opportunity to influence the work, you’ll find plenty of scope to do that here.

You’ll also have access to professional development and genuine career growth opportunities, flexible working, health and wellbeing initiatives, up to 26 weeks’ paid parental leave with superannuation, and the option to purchase up to four additional weeks of leave each year.

Most importantly, if you see a better way to do something, we want you to say it.
