Focus of the Role

Reporting to the Group Internal Audit Executive and as a member of the Group Internal Audit Leadership Team, this role is responsible for delivering high quality, risk based internal audit coverage across Telstra. You will lead and develop a high performing team of internal audit professionals, providing trusted insights that influence better business outcomes and strengthen the organisation’s control environment.This is a senior leadership role with strong visibility across the business and regular engagement with executive leaders, the Risk & Sustainability Committee (RSC), and external partners.

What You’ll Do

  • Partner with the Group Internal Audit Leadership Team to develop the annual Group Internal Audit Plan for approval by RSC, informed by emerging risks, regulatory change, and industry best practice.

  • Liaise with industry peers and professional services firms to ensure GIA’s approach aligns with contemporary internal audit standards and better practice.

  • Oversee the delivery of audit work, including:

    • Resourcing, scheduling and budgeting.
    • Ongoing prioritisation of work to respond to changing business and risk environments.
    • Oversight and management of third party providers.
  • Determine the most effective resourcing mix (internal capability vs. external subject matter experts) to maximise efficiency, flexibility, and value from audit activity.

  • Continually assess and refresh the GIA Plan to ensure emerging and changing risks are appropriately covered (e.g. regulatory change, system implementations, product changes, acquisitions, restructures).

  • Review and oversee audit work performed by direct and indirect reports to enhance audit quality – upholding rigorous standards in methodology, evidence, and documentation.

  • Support the preparation of RSC papers and executive reporting.

  • Coach, mentor, and inspire a high-performing team, fostering technical excellence and business partnering capabilities.

  • Build trusted relationships with senior leaders across Telstra to understand strategic objectives, key risks, and opportunities for improvement.

  • Influence the business to manage risk better, providing insights that drive practical improvement.

  • Drive thought leadership and continuous improvement, enhancing the profile, value, and strategic impact of Group Internal Audit.

About You

You are a senior internal audit leader with strong judgement, credibility, and the ability to operate confidently at executive and committee level. You bring:

  • Extensive experience (15+ years) in leading risk based internal audit delivery within complex organisations.

  • Proven capability leading and developing high performing internal audit teams.

  • Strong understanding of internal audit standards, governance, risk management, and controls.

  • Experience managing and leveraging external audit and advisory partners.

  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and influencing skills.

  • A continuous improvement mindset and passion for using insight to drive better business outcomes.

  • Professional certification such as Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), or equivalent credentials in IT audit, or risk management desirable.
