Head of Risk
Location : Melbourne / Brisbane / Sydney
The Head of Risk is responsible for establishing, leading, and embedding the enterprise risk management framework across the superannuation administration business. The role ensures that operational, regulatory, technology and outsourcing risks are effectively identified, assessed, monitored, and reported in line with Group and Regulator expectations, client fund requirements, and the company’s risk appetite. The role provides independent oversight while partnering closely with executive leadership, trustees, clients, and regulators to support safe, compliant, and resilient administration services. The role support the Chief Risk Officer (Superannuation) in building a strong risk culture. This role is responsible for leading a small team of risk professionals (one to three team members).
Job Responsibilities:
Design, maintain, and continuously improve the Enterprise Risk Management Framework, that drives quality outcomes and align with client regulatory and compliance obligations
Define and monitor risk appetite, risk tolerances, and key risk indicators (KRIs)
Ensure clear risk governance, including escalation pathways and accountability structures
Support the Governance, Risk, Audit and Compliance Committee (GRACC), other sub compliance committees and the Executive leadership team with high-quality reporting and insights
Engage with external parties, including regulators, auditors, and consultants.
Represent the Chief Risk Officer – Superannuation on risk matters as needed.
Identify and manage risks across core administration functions
Oversee control effectiveness testing and remediation of control weaknesses
Serve as the reliable Risk Partner for the Operations functions
Support regulatory engagement, reviews, and audits
Oversee risk aspects of regulatory change management and implementation
Ensure alignment with CPS 234 and CPS230
Lead the third-party and outsourcing risk framework, including material service provider oversight regarding Technology and Information Security to strengthen resilience and system controls
Support due diligence, contract risk assessments, and ongoing vendor monitoring
Lead risk input into business continuity planning, disaster recovery, and operational resilience testing
Support response to significant incidents and regulatory notifications
Promote a strong risk culture across the organisation
Provide risk training and guidance to leaders and frontline teams
Act as a trusted advisor to executives and client fund trustees
Collaborating with Group Line 2 Risk function to ensure compliance with Group-wide frameworks and policies
Lead and support Apex Super and client led audits to ensure consistency of approach, standard evidence frameworks, repeatable process and improved output.
Cultivate effective relationships within Apex Super to embed a consistent, high quality risk culture.
Skills required:
Bachelor’s or postgraduate degree in finance, business, law, or a related discipline.
Completion and maintenance of RG146 General Advice is Superannuation essential.
Senior risk leadership experience (7+ years) within superannuation environment
Comprehensive (10+ years) working knowledge of regulatory and legislative requirements in superannuation.
Proven ability in standing up business unit risk management processes (e.g. designing and embedding governance, reporting and monitoring mechanisms, controls design and implementation, issue and incident management) and uplifting overall business-unit risk capability via training, guidance and leadership on risk management
Experience in operational risk, technology risk, and third-party risk management
Previous success in delivering transformation / continuous improvement risk initiatives
Proven ability to perform effectively under pressure and contribute as a valuable team member, with strong collaboration, influencing and project management skills
Outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly in assessing complex regulatory changes and developing practical solutions.
Strong communication and relationship management skills, with experience engaging clients at all organizational levels to meet their needs and foster productive partnerships.
