About the team

The role sits in the Economic Analysis department, reporting to the Head of the AI Strategy and Economic Impact team. The team is responsible for leading work within the department, working closely with other teams, on the potential macroeconomic implications of AI and exploring the possible high-impact use cases for AI within the department. Much of the role involves analysing how AI and related technological change may affect economic activity, productivity, inflation, labour markets and monetary policy.

About the role

  • Contribute flexibly to both longer-term research projects and shorter-turnaround analytical tasks and briefing requests as priorities evolve.

  • Lead, initiate, scope and deliver analytical work with high policy relevance on the implications of AI for the economy consistent with identified internal priorities.

  • Lead and contribute to high-priority briefings, publications and policy advice on the economic implications of AI for senior decision-makers.

  • Review the evolving literature on AI's macroeconomic implications and support other sections to also understand these issues through coordination and knowledge sharing.

  • Explore AI tools made available by the Bank to understand their usefulness or limitations in conducting policy-relevant work.

About you

You will have demonstrated experience delivering high-quality analytical work on the Australian economy across a range of topics.

Additionally, you will also possess:

  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify, scope and deliver innovative policy-relevant research.

  • Strong macroeconomic intuition and the ability to analyse how developments in specific sectors or markets may affect the broader economy.

  • Experience considering the policy implications of economic shocks or possible structural changes on the Australian economy would be highly valued.

  • A willingness to experiment with AI tools and critically evaluate their usefulness and limitations for your workflow and therefore economic analysis and policymaking.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly and persuasively explain complex economic concepts to a range of audiences, including senior decision-makers and non-specialists.

  • The ability to build productive relationships across teams and can bring together insights from different areas to address complex policy questions.

  • Formal qualifications in economics.
