We're looking for a Principal Backend Software Engineer to join the Control Plane team within Atlassian's Transactional Data Platform org. This is a recently formed team, and you will join as a technical lead, responsible for driving multiple large streams of work to deliver a unified control plane for all data plane services. You will report to the Senior Engineering Manager for the Control Plane team.

In this role, you will:

  • Act as a technical lead for the team, responsible for setting technical direction that fulfils on our org-level and company level business priorities
  • Work across multiple streams within the team, as well as collaborate with peers in other teams across the org and Atlassian
  • Establish strong operational muscle within the team, and set a standard for our Atlassian value of Don't F the Customer
  • Contribute to features, project delivery, and go on-call for the team's services
  • Guide and mentor more junior engineers
  • Contribute toward a culture of trust and high performance


Your background:

  • 10+ years experience in multiple hands-on software/technology leadership roles, with end-to-end responsibility through the software development lifecycle.
  • Expertise with one or more prominent languages such as Java, Python, Kotlin, Go, or Scala is required.
  • Understanding of SaaS, PaaS, IaaS industry with hands-on experience with public cloud offerings (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure).
  • Experience building reliable services at scale
  • Experience building operational maturity in a team
  • Practice in mentoring other engineers and influencing decision makers throughout the organization.
  • Considers the customer impact when making technical decisions.
