We are seeking a Principal Legal Counsel (12-month fixed term contract) to join our high-performing legal team in Melbourne or Sydney. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced technology or commercial lawyer to play a key role in advising on complex IT transactions and emerging technology matters.

Your day at NTT DATA:

As a Principal Legal Counsel, you will provide expert legal advice to the business while supporting commercial decision-making and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and risk frameworks. You will work closely with internal stakeholders on transactional, advisory, and strategic legal matters, particularly within the IT and technology services space.

Key responsibilities:

• Lead legal negotiations and provide advice on a wide range of IT commercial transactions across public and private sectors, including government engagements.
• Support sales and pre-sales activities, including reviewing and preparing tender responses.
• Build strong relationships with business stakeholders to understand service offerings and provide aligned contractual guidance.
• Act as a trusted advisor, influencing decision-making with commercially focused legal insights.
• Provide practical and strategic legal advice on contract interpretation, regulatory compliance, and dispute-related matters.
• Work across a diverse portfolio of legal matters, from smaller engagements to large-scale projects.
• Contribute to the development of legal processes and procedures to enhance team efficiency.
• Promote a collaborative and high-performing culture within the legal team.

Academic qualifications and certifications:

• A current Australian Practicing Certificate.

Required experience:

• Minimum 6–8 years’ experience negotiating commercial and technology-related agreements, either in private practice or an in-house environment.
• Strong experience in compliance, data security, privacy, and intellectual property, including knowledge of local data protection laws.
• Experience working with or advising on government procurement frameworks (highly regarded).
