Job Description

  • Full-time, Ongoing position at Academic Level E.
  • Parramatta South campus with flexible working arrangements.
  • Salary: $230,375 – $238,446 per annum, plus 17% Super and Leave Loading.

Lead data science research and train the next generation of AI graduates and researchers.

The Opportunity

Machine learning at its best moves between fundamental work — in learning theory, algorithms, and representation — and applied work that puts it to use in the world. We welcome researchers who thrive in either or both. We value original, out-of-the-box thinking and a genuine desire to contribute to science and engineering, with impact that extends beyond the page.

As one of the professorial leads in the discipline, you will help set the research direction for machine learning within the School of Computer, Data and Mathematical Sciences — across deep learning, natural language processing, data science, and the mathematical foundations that underpin them. You will shape research, teaching and engagement, mentor academic staff and higher degree research candidates, and lead curriculum development that prepares graduates for careers in both research and industry.

Your work will also reach beyond Western Sydney University: building partnerships with industry, employers and government, and contributing to leadership in the responsible and trustworthy use of AI, where the questions are as much foundational as they are practical.

What Success Looks Like:

  • Deliver research that influences industry practice and the responsible use of AI.
  • Build partnerships that connect students to employer pathways.
  • Lead curriculum that prepares graduates for machine learning and AI roles.
  • Grow research capability and mentor academic staff and HDR candidates.

Please refer to the Position Description for full details.
