About the Role

The Project Director, Technology is an executive level role accountable for directing complex technology transformation initiatives across the Bank for the Payment Operations Program (POP). A core part of this program’s work is supporting the resilience and smooth operation of the Reserve Bank Information and Transfer System, which provides critical settlement services to Australian payments system participants – settling about $300 billion per day. This position provides strategic oversight, delivery governance, senior stakeholder engagement, and commercial leadership to ensure the POP Program delivers measurable business outcomes and uplifts technology maturity.

The Project Director, Technology will lead multi‑disciplinary delivery teams, drive alignment across business and technology units, manage vendor partnerships at a strategic level, and present confidently to POP’s senior executive Steering Committee. This role requires a highly experienced technology delivery leader who brings both strategic thinking and operational depth, with the ability to “dive into the detail” when needed.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Governance

  • Provide end‑to‑end leadership of large, cross‑functional technology streams across technology, people and processes.
  • Lead the delivery of stream objectives ensuring alignment to program priorities and sponsor expectations.
  • Present Technology Stream status, risks, decisions, and recommendations to POP’s Executive Steering Committee and Senior Executives across the business.
  • Maintain strong governance disciplines, using structured project and program management methodologies.

Program Delivery & Execution

  • Oversee planning, execution, and tracking of all Technology Streams, ensuring delivery milestones, quality standards, and benefits are met.
  • Assess and manage complex dependencies across technology, business operations, vendors, and compliance functions.
  • Ensure detailed program plans, schedules, budgets, workforce plans, estimates, and forecasting are accurate and maintained.
  • Monitor performance, identify variances early, and drive corrective actions to protect timelines and budget.
  • Ensure comprehensive risk, issue, and change management practices are embedded and effective.

Team Leadership & People Management

  • Lead, coach and line management a team of large multidisciplinary teams including Program Managers, Delivery Leads, Architects, Test Analyst, Technical SMEs, business analysts amongst others.
  • Foster a high‑engagement, high‑performance culture with clear accountability and continuous learning.
  • Create strong team cohesion and collaboration within and across program workstreams.

Stakeholder & Executive Engagement

  • Build productive, influential relationships with senior executives across business units, risk, operations, technology, digital, and security functions.
  • Act as the bridge between business and IT—translating complex technical topics into clear business language.
  • Ensure transparent, proactive communication to all stakeholders, with high‑quality executive‑level reporting.

Commercial, Vendor & Partner Management

  • Manage major technology vendor and partner relationships, ensuring strategic alignment, commercial performance, and delivery excellence.
  • Oversee contractual obligations, SOWs, commercials, pricing structures, and performance management.
  • Drive value through effective negotiation, vendor risk management, and optimisation of service delivery.

Technology & Delivery Expertise

  • Bring deep understanding of enterprise‑scale infrastructure services, tooling, and technology controls.
  • Oversee the uplift of technology controls, processes, systems, and risk management and delivery frameworks.
  • Ensure technology solutions and delivery approaches align with architectural standards, cybersecurity requirements, and regulatory expectations.
  • Demonstrate hands‑on experience in large‑scale technology delivery—balancing strategic oversight with the ability to engage on detailed technical or delivery issues when required.

Experience & Capabilities

You will bring:

  • Extensive experience delivering large, complex, multi‑stream technology programs in enterprise environments.
  • Proven ability to engage, influence, and present to Executive Steering Committees and senior business leaders.
  • Strong delivery background in infrastructure services, enterprise platforms, and technology uplift programs.
  • Demonstrated experience managing scope, budget, workforce planning, and large program governance structures.
  • Track record of managing and optimising strategic vendor relationships and commercial arrangements.
  • Experience driving uplift of technology controls, risk maturity, operational processes, and end‑to‑end systems.
  • A history of successfully leading large delivery teams with high engagement and clear accountability.

Technical & Leadership Capabilities

  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills suitable for senior executive audiences.
  • Ability to simplify complex technical and delivery issues for clear strategic decision‑making.
  • Strong networking and stakeholder‑influence skills across technology and business domains.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities that enhance value, efficiency, or delivery outcomes.
  • High degree of initiative and sound judgement, with the ability to make confident decisions in ambiguity.
  • Proven record of achieving high team performance and encouraging professional development.
