Job Description

Job Description

  • Exciting opportunity within our Data & Analytics team
  • Permanent, full-time roles working at our Mascot Campus (hybrid working options available)
  • Staff Travel Benefits from Day One!

The Senior Data Engineer will use their strong technical expertise and hands-on data engineering experience to develop scalable, reliable and cost-effective data solutions. Working across the end-to-end lifecycle of our data platforms and pipelines, you will contribute to solution design, development, implementation, maintenance and continuous improvement.

You will provide technical input to Architects, Delivery Leads and Product Owners, helping translate business and analytical requirements into practical cloud-based solutions. You will collaborate closely with Data Modellers, Technical Business Analysts, Delivery Leads, Product Owners and Visualisation Engineers while supporting enterprise engineering standards and contributing to the ongoing development of the Data Engineering practice.

The role initially requires hands-on experience in DataStage development and Teradata, together with the flexibility to work across evolving data engineering technologies and modern cloud platforms.

What you will bring:

  • 5+ years’ experience in data engineering or a similar hands-on, data-intensive role within a large and complex technology environment.
  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or another relevant quantitative or technical discipline.
  • Expert hands-on experience with Snowflake, including data modelling, platform security, access controls, performance tuning and cost optimisation.
  • Advanced experience with AWS and its data, storage and integration services; or equivalent Azure or Google Cloud experience.
  • Strong expertise in dbt (core), including transformation, modelling, automated testing, documentation and release management.
  • Enterprise-scale workflow orchestration experience, ideally using Apache Airflow or AWS Managed Workflows for Apache Airflow, including dependency management, retries and backfill patterns.
  • Advanced SQL capability, including complex analytical queries, query optimisation and set-based problem-solving.
  • Strong hands-on Python experience for data engineering, supported by sound software engineering practices such as version control, automated testing, peer review and maintainable code.
  • Experience using Terraform or equivalent infrastructure as code, including reusable module design, state management and environment promotion.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and operating multiple reliable data products for different business domains, with strong knowledge of data quality, observability, security and governance.
  • Exposure to FinOps considerations, including cost attribution, forecasting and optimisation of cloud and data-platform consumption.
  • Deep understanding of enterprise data integration across SaaS platforms, APIs, networking environments and complex source systems.
  • Exposure to Power BI, including an understanding of how semantic models and reports consume data-platform assets.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical and senior stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical direction, review designs and code, mentor engineers and promote consistent engineering standards across internal and partner teams.

Highly regarded:

  • Experience with Snowflake OpenFlow and Snowflake DCM
  • Experience with Alation, Cloudability or Datadog.
  • Experience establishing and operating data contracts between data producers and consumers.
  • Experience with Apache Kafka and event-streaming architectures.
