A Day-in-a-Life of our Senior Engineer, Billing and Payments

As our Senior Engineer, Billing and Payments, you own the flow of money through EatClub: from the moment a customer pays at a venue, through our payment partners, to the venue being settled and invoiced. On the payments side you build and extend the flows our customers and partners rely on every day, working with the staff engineer who sets their direction. On the billing side you are the squad's lead on settlements, invoicing and collections across Australia, the UK and New Zealand, with Finance as your daily counterpart. Too much of this still happens by hand today, and you will change that. This is a hands-on senior engineering role in a small, high-ownership squad.

On any given week, you will be:

  • Building and extending our payment flows: new payment methods, new partner integrations and improvements to how customers pay at venues
  • Keeping our payments reliable: investigating failures, fixing root causes and improving the signals that tell us something is wrong
  • Making sure every venue is settled correctly, every cycle, in every market
  • Building and extending our billing: invoicing, fees, tax and collections, so what a venue sees matches what our ledger says
  • Working with Finance to reconcile money end to end, and fixing the system when the numbers do not match
  • Replacing manual processes and support tickets with features, on both the payments and billing side
  • Reviewing code, protecting financial correctness with tests, and mentoring the squad's mid-level engineer

Projects you'll be working on at EatClub...

Sample initiatives you may lead:

  • Delivering the payment flow improvements designed with the staff engineer, from first commit to production
  • Integrating new payment partners and markets so customers can pay the way they expect, wherever they are
  • Improving payment reliability and observability so failures are rare, visible and quickly understood
  • Making venue settlements correct by design rather than by manual adjustment
  • Rebuilding billing so fees, adjustments and tax are handled consistently across markets
  • Automating collections so overdue invoices are chased by the system, not by Finance
  • Reconciliation tooling that lets anyone trace a transaction from payment to invoice to payout

You have….

  • At least 5 years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years building production payments, billing or other systems where correctness is measured in cents
  • Working knowledge of card payments: how a payment is authorised, captured, refunded and settled, and what can go wrong along the way
  • Hands-on experience integrating with a modern payment provider such as Stripe
  • Experience building or operating billing and invoicing systems, including tax and collections
  • Double-entry thinking: you understand ledgers and reconciliation, and you design so every movement of money has a matching record
  • Strong backend engineering in a modern language on cloud infrastructure, with thorough testing of financial logic
  • A track record of delivering significant projects end-to-end in production
  • Experience debugging intermittent production issues to root cause and preventing recurrence
  • The ability to work day to day with Finance and Customer Support and translate their problems into system changes
  • Fluency with AI development tools and judgement about where they help and where they mislead

It would be extra awesome if you also had…

  • Experience at a fintech, payments company or marketplace that settles money to merchants or venues
  • Familiarity with acquirer and bank integrations, or with payment schemes in Australia, the UK or New Zealand
  • Familiarity with GST/VAT and e-invoicing across our markets
  • Experience with a serverless AWS stack and event-driven systems
  • Exposure to PCI DSS, ISO 27001 or financial audit requirements
  • Experience in hospitality tech, or a love of restaurants and dining out

You are…

  • You are rigorous about money. A cent out of place bothers you, and you design so it cannot happen twice.
  • You are a finisher. You take a problem from the ticket to the root cause to the shipped fix, and you check it landed.
  • You are a systems thinker. You see payments, settlement and billing as one flow and notice when a change upstream will break something downstream.
  • You like Finance as much as you like engineering. You see accountants as customers and a source of truth, not an obstacle.
  • You are a force multiplier. You would rather make the squad better than be the only one who understands something.
  • You are hungry. You want to grow, and you are looking for a place that will support that growth.

If you do a good job…

  • Customers pay smoothly at every venue, in every market, and when something fails we know before they do.
  • Every venue is settled correctly, every cycle, with no one in the loop to make it so.
  • Every invoice matches the ledger and gets collected without Finance chasing it.
  • Payment and billing questions stop arriving as support tickets.
  • New payment partners and new markets launch with payments, settlement and billing ready on day one.

Maybe this role is not for you if….

  • You want to work only on payments or only on billing. This role owns the flow between them.
  • You find reconciliation, tax and invoicing boring. They are half of this job.
  • You prefer stability and clarity, clear playbooks, and unchanging priorities over a fast-moving environment.
  • You like the structure and predictability you get at a large bank.
  • You expect detailed instructions on how to design, prioritise or sequence your work.

If you're curious about what we're building, you're welcome to explore EatClub ahead of your interview. First-time users who choose to give it a try can use the code "ECAPPLY5" for an optional $5 voucher to test the experience. This is entirely voluntary and has no impact on your application or interview process.

One last note: even if you feel that you don’t meet all the criteria above, we encourage you to apply. Past work experience is not the only indicator of future success, and we are on the look out for hungry talent who wants to grow with us. So if you want to be a part of something remarkable, then we’re excited to hear from you.
