  • Hybrid ways of working - 3 days work from office
  • High-Impact Strategic Leadership: Shape and own the engineering agenda for an enterprise-wide data transformation

Endeavour Group is executing a transformative strategy to optimise critical business decision-making, with the clear goal of becoming a truly customer and data-led organisation. The Senior Manager of Data Engineering occupies a pivotal leadership position that seamlessly bridges the gap between strategic practice governance and hands-on operational leadership.

Reporting directly to the Head of Data and AI Capabilities within the Digital and Data department, you will oversee a talented team of 10–15 direct reports while collaborating closely with product leads and cross-functional teams across the business. In this role, you will drive the holistic design and optimisation of our Full Stack Data Engineering capabilities, establishing the essential engineering standards and guardrails required for scalable, cloud-native platforms. By governing secure API architectures and production-ready systems, you will play a fundamental role in delivering reliable business outcomes across all domains, from retail and hotels to digital squads, merchandising, and finance.

Sound good? Read on.

Here is a taster of what you can expect in this role:

  • Shape Strategic Direction: Define and own the strategic engineering direction and holistic roadmap in close collaboration with product leads, fostering an innovative engineering culture that attracts and retains top talent.
  • Lead and Mentor: Act as the lead supervisor for 10–15 engineers, owning the end-to-end professional lifecycle, including recruitment, onboarding, technical mentorship, competency evaluations, and career advancement paths.
  • Establish Engineering Standards: Define and embed rigorous SDLC protocols, "Definition of Done" frameworks, and quality metrics to ensure operational consistency and minimise technical debt across all squads.
  • Optimize Resource Strategy: Partner with Product Managers to right-size squads, align resource distribution with prioritised domain roadmaps, and eliminate capability-related impediments to maximize delivered value.
  • Govern Security & Architecture: Ensure system integrity by implementing critical security guardrails for client-server communication, secure API designs, webhook implementations, and authenticated server-side validations.
  • Partner Management: Proactively collaborate with external partners to augment team capabilities and integrate emerging industry trends.

Qualifications

Now let’s talk about you:

  • Team Leadership & People Ops: Extensive experience managing engineering cohorts, conducting performance cycles, and orchestrating resource distribution across multiple delivery squads to support sustainable workloads.
  • Cloud & Data Architecture Expertise: Expert knowledge of enterprise platforms like Databricks and Google Cloud Platform, complemented by a sophisticated grasp of Medallion and Kimball modelling frameworks.
  • Advanced Technical Execution: Strong proficiency in API development, secure authentication protocols (OAuth), and complex error handling across runtimes such as Python and PySpark.
  • Automation & Observability: Proven track record of building robust CI/CD pipelines, implementing Infrastructure-as-Code via Terraform, and executing advanced data validation using dbt frameworks.
  • Robust Governance Frameworks: Demonstrated mastery of version control systems, multi-environment deployment strategies, automated quality assurance, and configuration blueprints for low-code platforms.
  • Strategic Influence: Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with a proven ability to mentor technical teams, navigate cross-functional dynamics, and translate technical roadmaps into strategic business outcomes.
