The role

Clayton Utz is one of Australia's leading independent law firms, providing full-service commercial legal and consulting services to major national, government and global clients.

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Pricing Specialist to join our commercial finance team on a full-time, permanent basis in our Sydney office.

As a Senior Pricing Specialist, you'll own the day-to-day pricing function, providing the in-depth financial analysis that informs our pricing decisions and rates, and generating the insights that help partners understand client and matter profitability.  It's a role with genuine influence — your analysis will directly inform how we price our most complex matters and client relationships.

Reporting to the Commercial Finance Senior Manager, you'll work with autonomy alongside the broader shared services function including Clients & Markets, Finance and Business Intelligence teams, the CFO, and partners and lawyers across the firm.  You'll be a trusted business partner, comfortable bringing your analysis directly into the room with partners, backing your recommendations with confidence.   If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.

What you'll be doing

  • Independently recommend pricing strategies and rate structures for clients and matters, taking ownership of the financial modelling behind complex tender proposals and rate renegotiations

  • Prepare and present financial analysis on client and matter profitability directly to partners and senior stakeholders, partnering with the CFO and Clients & Markets team to evaluate fee structures and proposals

  • Drive the accurate capture and reporting of pricing data, working closely with the Business Intelligence team to build dashboards and reports that support the firm's profitability focus

  • Take the initiative in developing and refining the pricing tools, templates and processes used across the firm, and keep an eye on the market for pricing technology that could improve how we work

  • Champion the firm's pricing policy through training and education for partners, lawyers and the Clients & Markets team, including approving special rate amendment requests and reviewing outside counsel guidelines

  • Own and maintain our library of pricing content for tender responses, and drive pricing projects from analysis through to delivery

  • Take responsibility for the pricing metrics reported regularly to senior stakeholders, ensuring they're accurate and ready for partner-level discussion

What you'll bring

  • A bachelor's degree and CA or CPA qualification (or equivalent)

  • 5+ years' experience operating autonomously in a similar pricing role, or in a senior management accounting or analytics role — experience in legal or professional services is a strong plus

  • Strong financial and pricing modelling skills, including fee arrangements, matter profitability, realisation rates and scenario analysis

  • Advanced Excel skills, with exposure to Power BI, TM1 or similar BI tools (Aderant experience is a bonus, not a requirement)

  • The confidence to sit across the table from partners and senior stakeholders, challenge their pricing assumptions, and build trust with them quickly

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate financial detail into clear, commercial language for non-finance audiences

  • A self-starter mindset — comfortable managing your own workload and priorities with minimal day-to-day supervision
