The Senior Product Manager – Personal Loans NZ & Motor Loans AU/NZ is responsible for the end-to-end ownership, growth, and optimisation of two of the organisation’s core lending portfolios in New Zealand (Personal Loans and Motor Loans) and Australia (Motor Loans).

This role has accountability for defining and executing the product and portfolio strategy and roadmap for both Personal Loans and Motor Loans, ensuring sustainable revenue growth, strong customer outcomes, disciplined risk management, and full regulatory compliance. It spans the entire product lifecycle, from strategy and design through to pricing, delivery, performance management, and continuous improvement.

Operating as a senior manager within the Product function, the role partners closely with the GM, Product, Risk & Compliance, other executive stakeholders, and peers to balance commercial ambition with customer, risk, and compliance outcomes, and to ensure the portfolios remain competitive, scalable, and fit for the future.

Let’s look at some key responsibilities:

Portfolio ownership & strategy

  •  Support the end-to-end strategy and performance of the Personal Loans and Motor Loans portfolios in New Zealand (and Motor Loans Australia).
  • Define where to play and how to win across both portfolios, informed by customer and Partner insights, market dynamics, competitive positioning, regulatory context, and Organisational capability.
  • Develop and maintain product strategies and roadmaps that align with broader Business strategy and transformation priorities.
  • Be accountable (with Head of Marketing, Head of Commercial and Head of Product Initiatives) for portfolio decisions, trade-offs, and prioritisation.

Commercial leadership & growth

  • Drive sustainable portfolio growth, profitability, and balance sheet outcomes across both lending products.

  • Lead the development of robust business cases, financial models, and investment proposals for strategic and tactical initiatives.
  • Own offer strategy and execution (rates, fees, offers and features), ensuring decisions commercially sound, customer-appropriate, and compliant with governance.
  • Actively identify opportunities to optimise acquisition, conversion, utilisation, retention, and lifecycle value.

Customer & journey excellence

  • Set the vision for end-to-end customer journeys across Personal and Motor Loans, from origination through servicing and lifecycle management.
  • Champion customer-centric decision-making, applying CX and UX principles to materially improve customer outcomes and Net Promoter Score (NPS).
  • Use data and insight to proactively identify friction points and lead cross-functional initiatives to resolve them.

Risk, compliance & governance leadership

  • Ensure both portfolios operate within clearly defined risk appetite and regulatory frameworks at all times.
  • Partner closely with Risk and Compliance to design, implement and maintain effective controls, policies, and governance mechanisms.
  • Own product-related audit, assurance, and regulatory interactions, ensuring findings are addressed through well-governed, timely remediation.
  • Balance growth objectives with prudent risk management, acting as a trusted decision-maker in complex or ambiguous situations.

Delivery & stakeholder leadership

  • Act as the senior product owner and SME, clearly articulating strategic intent, priorities, and requirements to delivery teams.

  • Lead cross-functional collaboration across Product, Risk, Compliance, Operations, Technology, Sales, Broker and Marketing.
  • Influence and align senior stakeholders to deliver outcomes across competing priorities, constraints, and timelines.
  • Provide direction, challenge and guidance to ensure initiatives deliver intended commercial and customer outcomes.

Market & strategic insight

  • Maintain deep understanding of the New Zealand and Australian lending market,
  • including customer behaviour, regulatory trends, and competitor activity across
  • Personal and Motor Loans.
  • Translate external insights into actionable strategy and portfolio decisions.
  • Provide regular portfolio performance and market insights to the GM and senior leadership forums.

Portfolio management & continuous improvement
  • Establish and maintain clear portfolio performance frameworks, metrics, and reporting.
  • Ensure product documentation, process maps, pricing artefacts and internal
  • knowledge bases are accurate, current, and fit for purpose.
  • Drive continuous improvement in product, process, technology, and operating models
  • across both portfolios.

Ideally, we're looking for the following:  

  • Strong experience in senior product management within retail financial services (typically 6–8 years).

  • Proven experience owning and managing lending products or small portfolios, such as Personal Loans and/or Motor Loans, with exposure to the Australian and New Zealand markets preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead product and portfolio initiatives, contributing to strategy while maintaining accountability for delivery.
  • Tertiary qualification in Finance, Business, Economics, Marketing, or a related discipline.
  • Well-developed commercial acumen, with experience in pricing, financial modelling, and portfolio performance optimisation.
  • You are familiar with AI tools - comfortable using tools to accelerate insights, automate routine work, prepare reporting, and tailor content quickly and effectively.
  • Solid understanding of credit risk, compliance, and regulatory obligations within a lending environment.
  • Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills, including engagement with senior leaders and cross-functional teams.
  • Experience operating in complex, regulated and matrix organisations.
  • Good knowledge of responsible lending requirements and consumer fairness principles.
  • Outcome-driven, with a track record of driving delivery, resolving issues, and achieving measurable improvements.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to connect customer, risk, financial and operational perspectives.
