For thirty years we haven't left a stone unturned in improving the lives of those that use our products and solutions. However, never before has the obligation been greater for us to imagine and deliver what the future holds, and to do so with sustainability in mind.

Senior Product Sustainability Engineer – Job Description

The Materials Engineering Group is responsible for materials safety, strategy, and sustainability across ResMed’s global product development. The team prides itself on adapting quickly and relentlessly, improving to maximize the value delivered to the broader organization.

Within this group, the Product Sustainability team partners closely with stakeholders across ResMed to drive long-term value creation through sustainable processes and design practices, striving for innovative, loveable products with fewer emissions and less waste.

As a senior member of the Product Sustainability team, you’ll be part of a small but empowered group that informs, influences, and delivers on ResMed’s product environmental sustainability strategy.

Working in the highly regulated medical device space, you’ll help drive engineering awareness, guide responsible materials selection, and be an agent for change across the entire product portfolio, moving it towards a more sustainable future. You’ll report to the Product Sustainability Associate Manager and collaborate closely with both the broader Materials Engineering team, the Global Sustainability Team and various other functions across the business.

You’ll use your technical expertise alongside strong soft skills to creatively and pragmatically solve problems, while influencing continuous improvements in sustainability across the full product lifecycle. You’ll evaluate the environmental impact of products and shape practical solutions that embed sustainable materials and practices from early product development through to high-volume manufacturing.

You are realistic, optimistic, enthusiastic, and solution-focused. Market-savvy and commercially aware, you combine technical input, business insight, and the ability to balance competing priorities to make well-informed decisions. You’ll thrive in an empowered environment where deadlines are tight, challenges are often ambiguous, and innovation is a constant.

Let’s talk about Responsibilities
  • Shape the sustainability strategy: Define and refine ResMed’s product and packaging sustainability vision, roadmap, and targets (including emissions and waste reduction), balancing ambition with commercial realities. Establish measurable outcomes that drive both environmental impact reduction and business value.

  • Drive execution and delivery: Influence early design decisions to minimise environmental impact across the product lifecycle, including sustainable material selection, component design, supply chain and manufacturing processes, and end-of-life circularity. Lead and support cross-functional projects to bring the strategy to life.

  • Measure and track impact: Apply tools such as Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), carbon footprinting, and circularity metrics to monitor progress, provide insights, and guide decision-making.

  • Ensure regulatory compliance: Navigate regulatory uncertainty and support compliance to global environmental regulations and policies, including (but not limited to) Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes, the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), and the EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive.

  • Enable informed, strategic decisions: Apply a nuanced, risk-based approach to balance sustainability priorities with organisational risk and commercial considerations, ensuring initiatives deliver measurable outcomes that align with broader company goals.

  • Champion stronger collaboration between departments: Build strong relationships with teams including Supply Chain, Compliance, Reporting, and Finance, fostering alignment and embedding sustainability practices across the business

  • Educate and empower teams: Deliver sustainability training, workshops, and awareness programs that inspire, challenge, and enable teams across the organisation to embed sustainable practices in their work.

  • Engage and communicate effectively: Present on sustainability challenges, insights/developments and program proposals at various forums ranging from technical engineering reviews to senior leadership sessions, adapting communication styles to resonate with diverse audiences and stakeholders.

Let’s talk about Qualifications and Experience
Required
  • Technical experience in applying eco-design principles in product development, including responsible material selection, designing for repair/recycling, and leveraging Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) to reduce product carbon footprint.

  • Engineering or Science degree

  • Excellent written and verbal communication

  • Experience working collaboratively in cross-functional teams

Preferred

  • At least 5 years of experience in a relevant role

  • Environmental/Sustainability or Materials Engineering background

  • Understanding of compliance requirements within the global sustainability regulatory landscape, particularly in the medical devices industry

  • Proven project management skills, with hands-on experience driving initiatives from planning through to execution and successful delivery of projects or products
