At the heart of everything we do is a thriving culture centred around high performance and care. We are purpose driven and collaborative, which drives innovation and our ability to make a real impact. As such, we're proud to have been named one of Australia’s Best Workplaces four times since 2021 — including third place in 2025 — plus Best Workplace for Women in 2023 and Best Workplace in Technology in 2024 and 2025. These listings are testament to every person who helps make REA a great place to work.

Where the team fits in

This role sits within Financial Services, in our Acquisition & Retention tribe. The squad enables shared core backend services, integrations and data capabilities that power Financial Services consumer experiences across realestate.com.au and mortgagechoice.com.au. The team also helps establish clear ownership, strong engineering practices, operational readiness and a sustainable team rhythm, and partners closely with Product, Design, Architecture, Delivery and Risk & Compliance in a regulated, operationally mature environment.

What the role is all about

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will play a key hands-on role in building, running and evolving the shared services and integrations that underpin Financial Services consumer experiences. You'll help the team shape stronger platform boundaries, engineering practices and modernisation over time.

  • Design, build and maintain high-quality backend services, APIs, integrations and shared data capabilities.
  • Own technical delivery end to end, from discovery and solution design through build, release, monitoring and continuous improvement.
  • Make pragmatic technical decisions across service, integration and data-flow concerns, balancing customer value, maintainability, delivery pace, compliance and risk.
  • Help establish strong engineering ways of working, technical ownership and operational readiness in a newly forming squad.
  • Contribute through code review, pairing, technical design, documentation, mentoring and hands-on ownership of production outcomes, including incident response and follow-up improvements.

Who we're looking for

We're looking for a Senior Engineer who combines strong day-one delivery capability with the judgement to help shape the future direction of a newly forming platform-oriented squad.

  • Strong experience building and operating backend services, APIs, integrations and data flows in production environments, ideally supporting multiple products, channels or teams.
  • Deep software engineering fundamentals, including solution design, code quality, debugging, refactoring and sound technical judgement.
  • Strong hands-on backend engineering experience, ideally across Node.js/TypeScript and JVM-based ecosystems, with confidence working across GraphQL and REST boundaries and integrating with shared domain APIs.
  • Experience in shared-services, platform or domain-oriented environments, with a clear understanding of service boundaries, versioning and sustainable ownership.
  • A strong quality mindset, including automated testing, CI/CD, safe deployment practices and a bias towards maintainable, well-observed systems.
  • Practical experience improving production security, reliability, performance and observability, and confidence participating in operational support and incident response.
  • Comfort operating in regulated or operationally mature environments where system health, custodianship, compliance and risk management are part of normal engineering work.
  • A collaborative leadership style, with a willingness to mentor others, raise standards and help create clarity where ownership or patterns are still emerging.

The physical, mental, emotional and financial health of our people is something we'll never stop caring about. This is a place to learn and grow.
