Are you an insightful and driven reporter with deep interest in regulatory and legal affairs? We are looking for a Senior Reporter to strengthen our Sydney bureau and contribute high‑impact journalism to our global coverage. Join a team where your reporting will shape conversations across policy, regulatory enforcement, technology, and business.

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Reporter or a seasoned journalist to report on major policy and enforcement developments in Australia, including matters handled by the ACCC, OAIC, and Australian federal courts. Your reporting will span key areas such as competition law, antitrust, merger reviews, privacy & cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. You’ll also cover significant New Zealand developments as required.

Responsibilities include producing clear reporting on policy debates, attending or observing court hearings, collaborating with global editors, and developing investigative leads. Daily filing is encouraged whenever possible.

Reporting to the Managing Editor Asia-Pacific, this is a permanent full-time role based in St. Leonard’s Sydney office with combined home/office-based arrangements to have flexible work-life balance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high‑quality reporting and analysis on developments in competition, privacy, AI, and regulatory enforcement.

  • Work with editors and global colleagues to ensure Australian coverage features prominently in global reporting.

  • Attend or log into court proceedings, hearings, and regulatory events across Australia and New Zealand.

  • Monitor and pursue investigative leads, breaking original stories where possible.

Success Criteria

  • Deliver timely, accurate, well‑written journalism aligned with MLex style and editorial standards.

  • Consistently meet deadlines and contribute daily stories where appropriate.

  • Build strong collaborative relationships with editors and global reporters.

  • Demonstrate initiative in identifying story opportunities and developing sources.

Requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications in journalism, law, or a related field.

  • Minimum 5+ years of journalism experience.

  • Strong writing skills with ability to simplify complex legal/policy matters.

  • Understanding of Australian and New Zealand legislative processes.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced newsroom.

  • Organised, detail‑focused and able to prioritise competing deadlines.

  • French‑language skills are an advantage (not essential).
