Job Description:

Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Services Engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks from administrative to strategic. The position is based in Sydney, Australia.

The Services Engineer will provide remote, on-call, shift-based, and onsite technical support for CCS and COM systems operating within the MTS service environment, ensuring system availability and performance in accordance with service level agreements (SLAs).

Key responsibilities:

  • Perform remote monitoring, investigation, fault diagnosis, and troubleshooting activities, and undertake site visits when required to support fault rectification, maintenance, testing, commissioning, or operational incidents. 

  • Perform preventive maintenance activities including planned inspections, health checks, diagnostics, condition assessments, system monitoring, configuration verification, backup validation, and proactive reliability improvement initiatives.

  • Perform corrective maintenance activities including fault diagnosis, troubleshooting, fault rectification, root cause analysis, technical investigations, implementation of corrective actions, and restoration of services within agreed SLA timeframes.

  • Support system upgrades, equipment replacement, configuration changes, software updates, engineering modifications, variation orders, and defect rectification activities.

  • Provide technical support for testing, integration, commissioning, migration, transition-to-service, and operational readiness activities associated with system enhancements and newly delivered assets.

  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, technical documentation, support reports, and customer communications, while providing regular status updates to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Participate in a rostered on-call support arrangement and perform shift work, planned maintenance, possession activities, and out-of-hours works, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, as required to support operational and project delivery activities.

  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with Metro Trains Sydney (MTS), internal Hitachi Rail teams, and third-party suppliers to ensure delivery of a professional, customer-focused support service and achievement of operational performance objectives.

Key skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Broad understanding of railway Communications (COM) and Control Command Systems (CCS).

  • Strong working knowledge of SCADA and integrated operational railway systems.

  • Experience supporting operational rail, transport, or critical infrastructure environments.

  • Demonstrated experience delivering preventive and corrective maintenance activities.

  • Experience with fault diagnosis, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and technical investigations.

  • Knowledge of incident management, SLA-based service delivery, maintenance, and asset management practices.

  • Experience supporting upgrades, modifications, equipment replacement, and engineering changes.

  • Experience supporting testing, commissioning, and transition-to-service activities.

  • Experience managing customer tickets, internal support tickets, PCRs, defects, and technical change processes through to closure.

  • Experience coordinating with internal engineering teams, suppliers, and external stakeholders to resolve technical issues.

  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently and participate in an on-call support roster.
