Job Description

About the Opportunity 

We are seeking a skilled Technical Officer to support the delivery of teaching and research outcomes within our mechanical workshop facilities. Working under the direction of the Manager or Lead Technical Officer, you will manufacture, maintain and repair specialised equipment, provide technical guidance to staff and students, and ensure workshop operations are safe, efficient and compliant. This is an excellent opportunity to apply your technical expertise in a collaborative environment that supports innovation, learning and research excellence.

Key responsibilities

  • Support teaching, research and consultancy activities through the manufacture, modification, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment and components.
  • Interpret technical drawings and specifications to fabricate, machine and weld specialised equipment.
  • Provide technical advice and hands-on support to staff and students in the design and development of equipment and prototypes.
  • Diagnose faults and perform maintenance and repairs on workshop and University equipment.
  • Deliver training and guidance on the safe use of workshop tools, machinery and processes.
  • Maintain workshop records, inventory and procurement activities to ensure efficient operations.
  • Contribute to a safe, compliant and continuously improving workshop environment.
  • Provide excellent customer service and collaborate effectively with colleagues across Technical Services and the Sciences Group.
  • Undertake other duties consistent with the level and responsibilities of the role.

About you

  • The occupant of this position will hold a recognised trade qualification in fitting and turning, mechanical engineering trades, metal fabrication, or a related discipline, together with demonstrated experience in the operation of workshop machinery and fabrication equipment, including lathes, milling machines, saws, grinders, presses and welding equipment.
  • Alternatively, an equivalent combination of relevant qualifications, training and practical experience may be considered.

This is a full time continuing opportunity primarily based at Griffith University Brisbane South (Nathan) campus. As Griffith is a multi-site university, you may be required to work across other locations.

Griffith University’s sites are located on the lands of the Yugarabul, Yuggera, Jagera, Turrbal, Yugambeh and Kombumerri peoples.

Salary

HEW 5 – Base range - $82,415.66 - $92,456.55 + 17% super. Full package range - $96,426.31 - $108,174.16.
