Job Description

 

This specialist role is focused on retrospective underwriting within TAL’s Group insurance business, where you will assess non-disclosure identified at claim or underwriting stages and provide formal underwriting opinions.

You will determine appropriate remedies under relevant legislation and communicate decisions through high-quality written outcomes, including procedural fairness and decision letters.

Partnering with Claims, Underwriting and Dispute Resolution teams, you will also support complex complaint matters and external review processes. This role requires deep underwriting expertise, strong technical judgement, and the ability to navigate sensitive, high-impact decisions.

 

In this role you will:
 

  • Deliver clear, evidence-based retrospective underwriting decisions to ensure fair and consistent customer outcomes.
  • Evaluate non-disclosure cases within agreed timeframes, supporting timely claims and underwriting decisions.
  • Partner with claims, operations and IDR/EDR teams to resolve complex and sensitive customer matters.
  • Provide informed input on complaints and litigated cases, supporting balanced and compliant resolutions.
  • Uphold underwriting standards and philosophy to protect portfolio integrity and commercial outcomes.
  • Contribute insights from case assessments to support continuous improvement in underwriting practices.

Qualifications

 

  • Bring deep expertise in life insurance underwriting, enabling confident and balanced decision-making.
  • Apply strong knowledge of industry standards and regulations to support fair and compliant outcomes.
  • Use sound judgement to assess risk and make timely, well-informed decisions.
  • Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively across teams to resolve complex matters.
  • Work autonomously with a high level of accuracy, efficiency and attention to detail.
  • Take a proactive, improvement-focused approach, using insights to challenge and strengthen underwriting practices.
