Job Description

Join AECOM’s Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) Generation & Storage team as an Associate Director to lead the delivery of utility-scale, renewable wind projects. You will act as the technical lead for Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) activities across different project development phases (pre‑FID and post‑FID), working closely with developers, OEMs, EPCs and multidisciplinary teams to drive high‑quality outcomes in design, procurement, delivery and commissioning.

You will have a broad scope as part of the Generation & Storage team to grow our client relationships to originate projects.  The fast-paced and innovative nature of projects will suit a technical leader looking to make a difference across the renewable sector, where understanding client needs, balancing engineering concepts and commercial project considerations will be key part of your role.

How you will make a difference

  • Be the WTG subject matter engineering lead across development to commissioning, delivering turbine/platform selection, layouts, configurations and performance expectations.
  • Providing Owners’ Engineer (OE) leadership across design, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover, assuring technical integrity and delivery excellence.
  • Pre‑Financial Investment Decision (FID) and investment support leading technical due diligence, risk assessments and design reviews, develop/assure technical methodologies and prepare decision‑grade reporting to support FID.
  • Develop technical specifications that support contract and commercial considerations, including negotiations; shape Turbine Supply & Installation (TSI) and Warranty, Operations & Maintenance (WOM) terms, and assess commercial implications for risk, cost and long‑term performance.
  • Design governance and compliance: Review and validate OEM/EPC/BoP deliverables, ensure compliance with IEC, DNV and AS/NZS standards, plus project‑specific requirements and contract schedules.
  • Oversee technical inputs for grid connections, including connection strategy and processes, ensure studies, interfaces and compliance requirements are integrated into design and delivery.
  • Delivery and site leadership, including manufacturing oversight and Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), lead site QA/QC, punch lists, walkdowns, installation, start‑up, commissioning and reliability runs, and verifying conformance to detailed design.
  • Supply chain engagement being the interface with multiple international WTG OEMs and global supply chains, managing interfaces, logistics, quality and performance guarantees.
  • Supporting business development activities including proposal and bidding responses, as well as building key client relationships.
  • Lead workshops with client technical teams and contractors, contribute to bids, methodologies, resourcing and schedule development.
  • Provide mentoring and coaching for the development of others in the Generation and Storage team, supporting their career development.

Ideally based in Sydney, this role has scope to be based in other main AECOM offices.  Travel to project and client sites will be required from time to time.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will be an experienced engineering and commercial leader across Renewable Wind projects.  You will be known for your technical engineering abilities and your commercial understanding of wind energy project development.

The following qualifications and experience are highly desired, but if you don’t tick all the boxes, you could still be a perfect fit for this role. Please apply, as all applications will be considered.

What you will bring

  • Extensive site‑based experience delivering utility‑scale wind projects from construction to commissioning, with the ability to connect site realities to commercial and financial decisions.
  • Deep knowledge of WTG technology and balance‑of‑plant, with strong experience working across multiple wind OEMs and international supply chains.
  • Significant experience (10+ years) in wind engineering with increasing leadership responsibility, including owners’ engineering and design governance on large, complex projects.
  • Strong understanding of Australian regulations, grid codes and local standards with the proven experience navigating grid connection and consent requirements.
  • Track record assuring quality and compliance—confirming what is built aligns with detailed design and contractual performance obligations.
  • Demonstrated capability developing technical specifications, managing interfaces, leading design reviews and securing performance guarantees.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills across technical and commercial domains; confident representing the owner with OEMs, BoP contractors and advisors.
  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace or related engineering discipline – a postgraduate qualification such as being a Chartered Engineer is advantageous.
  • A passion for mentoring and the development to support the growth of the next generation of Renewable and Wind Engineers.
