Job Description

As part of our API Strategy programme, we are searching for a talented Cloud Engineer within our API & Integration Platform team in order to overachieve on our goals of building an open, secure API platform, uplifting the DevSecOps practice across the organisation and incorporating our secure by design initiative.

This is a hands-on technical role requiring a detailed understanding of modern API practices, best practice patterns and the technical ability to build and migrate existing API’s onto our new API platform. You will be an API specialist with experience in code review tools and practices, software development and coding, automation and orchestration, and CI/CD pipelines.

The role works closely with products owners, senior leaders, partners and directly with IT delivery teams to help them proactively identify and resolve cyber security issues.

As an API Engineer, you will:

  • Ensure that team’s purpose and objectives are clear and linked to the broader TAL vision, strategic plan and supports our technology and cyber strategy.
  • Champion the TAL Continuous Delivery (CD) agile method of working with an emphasis on uplifting our DevSecOps practice.
  • Provide guidance on frameworks and encourage a culture of ownership and accountability of API development related activities within our delivery teams.
  • Empower and support product owners and delivery teams to invest in security related activities.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring of API development related activities, with a view to foster a secure API aware culture through initiatives such as ‘secure by design’.
  • Engage with developers, architects, business and senior management to increase the awareness and adoption of leading practices.
  • Participate in the development of API standards, preferred implementation patterns, common frameworks, and developer documentation and education materials.
  • Coordinate and lead cyber related technical implementation activities with our delivery teams.
  • Review the results and recommend effective remediation of vulnerability scan and penetration test reports.
  • Provide a framework for development teams to follow as part of any development work being completed.
  • Build strong relationships with internal customers, stakeholders, 3rd parties, other delivery, infrastructure and operations teams to ensure enable efficient delivery.
  • Work with People & Culture team and training partners to plan and create a developer API training curriculum for TAL teams.
  • Run regular knowledge sharing sessions and keep everyone at TAL informed through regular blog posts.

Experience:

  • Software / Systems Engineering degree or a related field qualification.
  • Software development background, with commercial experience in building applications at enterprise-scale level.
  • Strong technical background, ideally having worked as a developer for 5+ years, including solid experience with Azure, AWS or GCP Cloud platforms, .Net, SQL Server and NoSQL technologies and messaging/queueing technologies such as Service Bus/Kafka.
  • Deep architectural understanding of digital platforms with a passion for discovering, understanding and coaching teams on the latest technology trends.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible, adaptive and resilient in a fast-changing environment.
  • Experience in managing multiple deliveries concurrently.
  • Working knowledge of programming languages (C#, Javascript, Python etc.).
  • Strong ability to manage and report on multiple projects / system deployments concurrently, prioritising efforts, managing time effectively, and requiring minimal supervision in the execution
  • Understanding of application security patterns including web application security (SQL Injection, XSS, CSRF, platform hardening, etc.)
  • Experience understanding adversarial tactics, techniques, and response mitigation procedures.
  • Understanding of development issues, SDLC and Agile methodologies.
