Job Description

This role is responsible for the Testing of TAL’s Data assets, through detailed capture and execution of test cases using excellent communication skills to engage with and build strong relationships with key TAL business and Technology Stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities:

Test Planning & Control

  • Liaise with relevant stakeholders to understand risk or business impacts and establish acceptance criteria for newly implemented or changed data on the Data Analytics Platform (DAP)
  • Run or participate in workshops to request testing reviews and approvals from stakeholders as required.
  • Determine appropriate test strategies for project /agile sprint deliverables and regression suites as required.
  • Contribute to continuous integration efforts to automate testing where appropriate.
  • Provide estimates of test effort via estimation workshops or as ad hoc requests for estimations to be provided.
  • Assess and select appropriate tooling for testing as required.
  • Work closely with the change delivery team (including Data Engineers, BA’s & Testers) and Product Owners to understand integration structures, limitations, infrastructure, capabilities, risks, downstream impacts of changes.
  • Document workshop and meeting notes to share knowledge and disseminate information required for testing across the change delivery team as required.

Test Analysis & Design

  • Assist with analysis and requirements specifications, incorporating an understanding of data integration points and regression risk impacts.
  • Develop progression and regression testing strategies, plans and test cases that verify the continued correct functioning of a broad cross-section of the data.
  • Contribute to the development of automated test suites including enhancements to test cases for automation suitability as required. Provide information / assistance to the automation tester as required.
  • Document traceability to requirements for test objectives / cases / scenarios.
  • Plan for test environment requirements needed to be able to execute planned tests.
  • Create reusable testing components and libraries for efficient test case development

Implementation & Execution

  • Perform Testing of database ETL changes, integration and user acceptance testing of new change and fixes included in new data releases.
  • Utilise Data mapping documents and functional specification documentation to conduct testing
  • Conduct testing within an Agile methodology framework.
  • Undertake effective analysis and tracking of identified defects and subsequent retesting of the fix/es.
  • Ensure sufficient regression testing is conducted after defect retesting and for the Release as a whole.
  • Set up and maintain test data to support the execution of test scenarios.
  • Utilise and document test techniques used in preparing and executing testing.
  • Use of appropriate test techniques and ensure test plans & test results are sufficiently executed and documented.
  • Assist to maintain and execute automation test scripts.
  • Write complex SQL queries to validate data integrity and transformation logic in the ETL process.
  • Execute queries to compare source and target data, ensuring data consistency and correctness.
  • Analyse test failures and discrepancies in data using SQL queries to perform root cause analysis.

Evaluating Exit Criteria & Reporting

  • Execute test plans and test cases as part of the SCRUM team. Report issues and defects using applicable tools, procedures, and practices.
  • Provide input for metrics & reporting to management & stakeholders.
  • Produce test artefacts (including Test Strategies, Plans, Test Status reports, Test Completion reports etc).
  • Provide daily status updates of test execution as required.
  • Ensure acceptance criteria & Definition of Done is clearly understood, agreed, and documented.

Test Closure Activities

  • Clearly document test scope, coverage, assumptions, and test results.
  • Ensure test data and test artefacts are sufficiently maintained / archived.

Other Duties

  • Demonstrate self-leadership and encourage a collaborative and passionate team culture.
  • Good written and verbal skills ensuring effective communication and feedback loops.
  • Work closely with Data Engineers and Automation Testers to assess automation test approaches and help drive the continuous improvement automation test effort.
  • Be open to mentoring opportunities and feedback.
  • Be adaptable to any late requirement changes as per sprint priorities, while still ensuring product quality is maintained.
  • Become an SME (Subject Matter Expert) for TALs data and familiarise yourself with customers’ business needs.
  • Support Data Governance, Management, and Risk compliance.

  • Organises workload and priorities to adhere to agreed timeframes and service standards.
  • Explores alternative solutions to improve effectiveness and productivity within the team.
  • Makes informed and timely decisions when appropriate, weighing up risks and outcomes using sound risk awareness and management practices.

  • Regularly evaluates own capabilities and sets development goals in conjunction with the Manager using 70:20:10 model of learning and development.
  • Ensures others are treated fairly and equitably.

Qualifications

  • Write complex SQL queries to validate data integrity and transformation logic in the ETL process.
  • Execute queries to compare source and target data, ensuring data consistency and correctness.
  • Analyse test failures and discrepancies in data using SQL queries to perform root cause analysis.
  • Over 5 years testing experience, with at least 3 years in data testing, gained in an environment requiring development of new and innovative approaches.
  • Tertiary qualification in Business, Financial services, or related discipline.
  • In depth knowledge of testing philosophies, approaches, and data technologies.
  • Excellent knowledge of trends in Data and innovation.
  • Commercially astute and a strong customer focus.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and plan own work with high attention to detail.
  • Provide support, training, and assistance within the team, offer input, suggestions and decisions as required.
  • Participate in special projects by providing testing input as and when required.
  • Professional Development – attend and actively participate in training opportunities, both internal and external.
  • Good working knowledge of professional standards and codes.
  • Ability to work autonomously.
