Job Description

Cuscal's 'Taxation Manager' is responsible for overseeing the taxation affairs of the Group, ensuring compliance with applicable Australian taxation obligations, whilst supporting business initiatives with timely and pragmatic tax advice.

Reporting to the Financial Controller, this role acts as the SME,  owning the organisation's tax governance framework, tax reporting, tax compliance oversight, and tax risk management activities.

The Taxation Manager is responsible for managing relationships with external tax advisors and service providers, reviewing technical advice and compliance deliverables, and ensuring tax outcomes are appropriately reflected within the financial statements, regulatory reporting and Board reporting processes.

The role requires strong collaboration across Finance, Treasury, Risk, Legal, Company Secretariat and business stakeholders to ensure taxation implications are appropriately considered in all strategic and operational decision-making.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Group’s day-to-day tax compliance obligations, including income tax, GST, FBT, PAYG withholding, stamp duty, FATCA, CRS, ATO third-party reporting and other relevant tax obligations.
  • Coordinate the preparation, review and timely lodgement of tax returns, calculations, reconciliations and supporting workpapers, working with external tax advisers where required.
  • Maintain and support the Group’s tax governance framework, ensuring tax policies, procedures, controls and evidence are current, practical and aligned to ATO expectations.
  • Monitor tax legislative and regulatory developments and assess their potential impact on the Group, escalating material matters to the Financial Controller.
  • Prepare and review tax accounting inputs for financial reporting, including tax provisions, deferred tax calculations, tax disclosures and audit support.
  • Provide practical tax input to Finance, Treasury, Legal, Risk and business stakeholders on operational initiatives, contracts, product changes and projects.
  • Support responses to ATO queries, reviews and information requests, coordinating input from internal stakeholders and external advisers.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve tax processes, controls, documentation and use of technology, including automation where appropriate.
  • Support tax aspects of projects, new business initiatives, acquisitions and integration activities, including preparation of analysis and recommendations for review.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years’ deep tax experience, gained in a corporate tax, professional services or financial services environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of Australian corporate tax, GST, FBT and tax-effect accounting principles.
  • Experience supporting tax compliance processes, including preparation or review of tax returns, calculations, reconciliations and supporting workpapers.
  • Experience working with external tax advisers and auditors to deliver accurate and timely tax outcomes.
  • Ability to interpret tax issues, prepare practical recommendations and escalate complex or judgemental matters appropriately.
  • Strong analytical, planning, stakeholder management and written communication skills.
  • Experience in banking, payments, financial services or another regulated environment.
  • Experience supporting R&D tax incentive claims, tax governance reviews or tax control testing.
  • Exposure to tax consolidation, transfer pricing or cross-border tax reporting obligations.
