Job Description
The Role
We're looking for a Senior Product Designer to join a small, high-ownership Product & Design team at Lumi Finance. This is a broad, end-to-end and genuinely upstream role.
You'll work as a product triad across multiple product streams, shaping direction from the earliest stages of discovery through to delivery.
At Lumi, borrowers and brokers/partners are all customers and serving all of them well is one of the most complex, most interesting design problems in fintech.
We build complex financial products - credit facilities, quoting tools, decisioning flows, that need to be both commercially sound and easy to understand and use.
You'll bring the customer perspective into rooms full of Risk, Finance, and Data stakeholders, and help teams make better decisions because of it.
We're also a team that takes AI seriously, not as a buzzword, but as a genuine shift in how we discover, design, and build.
If you're actively rethinking your practice for an AI-native world, you'll find a lot of room to shape that here.
What you will own…
- Designing for Financial Complexity: Our products surface dense financial data. Your job is making it feel simple and actionable for a borrower checking their facility, and for an ops user managing it.
- Upstream Product Collaboration: Get involved before the brief exists. Work with PMs and engineers in pre-discovery; helping frame problems, stress-test assumptions, and define what "good" looks like before a single screen is drawn. Design at Lumi starts in the conversation, not the file.
- AI-Assisted Discovery & Research: Use AI tools actively in your research practice; synthesis, pattern recognition, interview analysis, journey mapping. You're not waiting for research ops to exist; you build the feedback loop yourself, and you're thoughtful about where AI accelerates that and where it falls short.
- End-to-End Design: Own UX and service design across multiple product streams, from early concepts and flows through to high-fidelity prototypes and handoff. Our products include broker-facing tools, customer portals, and internal ops workflows.
- Product Trio Collaboration: Work as a true member of the trio, not a ticket-taker. Challenge scopes, raise risks early, and help the Product Manager and Tech Lead make better-informed decisions.
- Design System Contribution: Help maintain and evolve our design system, keeping it practical, scalable, and connected for an AI world and tools - not just a component library that lives in Figma.
This Person Is Someone With…
Discovery-led. Collaborative by default. Comfortable with complexity.
- Proven experience in SaaS or Fintech product design. You've worked end-to-end, from problem framing to shipped product, and can show your thinking, not just your visuals.
- Strong discovery and research skills. You've run your own user research, synthesised findings into insights, and used them to change a product direction. You don't wait for a dedicated researcher to do this.
- Upstream collaboration. You don't wait to be handed a brief. You're in the room or creating the room, before decisions get made. You work naturally alongside PMs and engineers from problem framing onwards, shaping scope rather than inheriting it. You understand technical constraints well enough to have a credible opinion on trade-offs.
- Customer Experience & Lifecycle: You think in journeys, not screens. You've designed across the full customer and partner lifecycle — onboarding, activation, retention, re-engagement, and the tools and touchpoints that sit in between. At Lumi that means thinking across borrowers, brokers, and partners: understanding how their experiences intersect, and designing for the long-term relationship, not just the next interaction.
- Complexity management. You can distil a 20-page credit policy or a convoluted ops workflow into a clear, testable design. Regulated environments don't intimidate you.
- Systems thinking over surface design. You design flows and systems, not just screens. You understand data structures, API constraints, and edge cases — and design for them.
- Commercial curiosity. You care about how design decisions affect activation, utilisation, and retention — not just how they look.
- AI-native design practice. You've genuinely changed how you work because of AI, not just adopted a few tools. That might mean using AI to synthesise research faster, generate and stress-test concepts earlier, or rethink how intelligent features change the user's mental model entirely. You think critically about where AI helps and where it introduces new design problems. You're not chasing hype; you're building a considered practice.
What you'll get: A small, senior design team where your work is visible and your opinion shapes the product. Real ownership from day one, working alongside an experienced Design Lead. A company that's growing fast in a category that matters.
This is a highly collaborative role — design here doesn't happen in isolation. The best design decisions at Lumi happen when you're in the room with Risk, Finance, Data, and Engineering, not just on a call with them. That's why we ask for 3 days/week in our Sydney office.
This is a role for someone who wants broad ownership and is comfortable navigating ambiguity. You'll help us evolve the design practice as much as the product.
