The role requires hands-on software engineering across Linux, JVM or systems technologies, Kubernetes, AWS, observability, performance analysis, incident response, sharding, replication, and multi-region architectures.

Own reliability for Canva’s highest-risk systems by writing production software, improving distributed systems, debugging large codebases, and reducing incidents, latency, and operational toil. The role involves embedded collaboration with product teams, platform contributions, observability, performance analysis, Kubernetes, AWS, Linux internals, networking, and incident response at significant scale.

Lead Canva-wide evaluation strategy for multimodal generative AI across design, image, video, audio, and agentic workflows. Develop reliable human-preference evaluations, auto-raters, MLLM judges, reward signals, benchmarks, and production monitoring. Connect metrics to user and business outcomes, identify bias and contamination, establish launch gates, diagnose regressions, partner with model teams, mentor researchers and engineers, and represent Canva’s evaluation practice externally.

Create high-quality, short-form AI-generated videos end to end from creative briefs. Develop prompts, direct visual composition and motion, iterate across AI video tools, and maintain reusable workflows. Provide structured feedback on model outputs, uphold quality, safety, brand, representation, and copyright standards, and monitor developments in AI video technology. The role supports Canva’s scalable AI video production capabilities.

Design, develop, and deploy performant software for Canva’s editor, primarily using TypeScript with opportunities across React Native and native platforms. Drive measurable performance improvements through instrumentation and performance data, build frameworks and libraries for other engineers, solve complex architectural problems, and lead initiatives from concept through delivery. Collaborate with engineering, design, and product teams while sharing technical knowledge across the organization.

Provide high-trust executive support to the Founder: manage calendars and meeting triage, build stakeholder relationships, prepare meeting materials and decks, organise travel and expenses, coordinate events and off-sites, and handle ad-hoc operational tasks while leveraging AI to improve efficiency and maintain strict confidentiality.
